Donell Jones and Emanny: My Birthday Treat at S.O.B's

98.7 Kiss FM & S.O.B's Concerts Present: Donell Jones, special guest Emanny. Hosted by Lil Nat and Bugsy Buggs with music by DJ Qua. March 30, 2011 S.O.B's in Manhattan.

I must have the luck of the Irish, well I am part Irish, in me because I won tickets to this concert on my birthday by texting the name of a movie to 98.7 Kiss FM with Shaila. The movie was "The Devil Wears Prada." Thanks to that being my favorite movie and my birthday making me get up early to hear the radio, I got a chance to have one of the best experiences ever.

What I Wore

I was going crazy in my house trying to figure out how to get there, what to wear and who to take with me. Richie had to work so he told me to take my bff Shauna, whose birthday was the 26th and she did invite me to go see a taping of "America's Got Talent" with her but I had to work. She wanted to spend our birthdays together and what better way to do it than go see Donell Jones. So I jumped on Google and got the directions. Then got my clothes ready that night. I still went to work that day but after work it was on.

So we met up at Penn Station and got into the city. Nearly got lost but thanks to the guys with the pretty eyes lol, we found our way. We were there right in front of the line and then he came walking by. I bet yall are wondering who. Donell Jones waved and smiled at us and we were like frozen statues and we never freeze. Especially as much as we were on TRL. But we finally go in after my name was checked off the guest list. It was a beautiful place inside and DJ Qua was on the money with the hits.

Emanny singing "Get You Home" to me :-)

The special guest Emanny blew people away with his cool lyrics and amazing voice. He's an unsigned artist that needs to be signed not now but right now. He sung songs such as "All She Wants Is Me" a reply to Miguel's "All I Want Is You" and "Hope He Cheats on You" a reply to Marsha Ambrosius' "Hope She Cheats on You." I was also picked out of the crowd (I was front and center) to be sang to on stage. I was soooo nervous because everyone was taking photos and videos of me. Even Shauna captured part of the moment. He even song Happy Birthday to me. Lil Nat presented me with more ticket to see a play "What You're Man Doesn't Know" and asked me if I had a man. I said "Yea" and she was like "Wow what happens at SOB's stays in SOBs!" LOL.

Then Donell Jones came out and the crowd went wild. He performed numerous hits including "U Know What's Up," "This Luv," "Where I Wanna Be," and Stevie Wonder's "Knocks Me Off My Feet." He was so full of energy. I really enjoyed his performance and I melted with his smile. He's such a great singer, he needs way more recognition. His new album came out August 10, 2010 and he songs songs from it such as "Love Like This" and "All About Sex." I truly had a blast at SOBs in NYC watching Donell Jones rip it up! I was also sung to by Emanny and I shook Donell Jones' hand. I will cherish this moment forever.

Happy Birthday to the late Sarah Vaughan!

Photobucket

Sarah Vaughan

March 27, 1924 – April 3, 1990

The late legendary jazz artist from Newark, NJ would have been 87 years-old today. She was described as "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century" by known jazz commentator Scott Yanow. She was born in Newark, NJ March 27, 1924. She attended schools in Newark such as East Side High School before transferring to my alma mater, Newark Arts High School. She was also a Grammy Award winner for Best Jazz Vocal Performance in 1982 for her album, "Gershwin Live!"

March Madness in Newark

Amazing as it seems the 2011 NCAA East Regional games came to Newark, NJ as a part of the Go Newark Hoop Fest. If I knew I was gonna be off this weekend ahead of time, I would have been there instead of watching it on television. The teams that played here over the weekend was University of Kentucky, Marquette University, University of North Carolina, and Ohio State. The games were played at the Prudential Center.

I love how Newark has built the arena and it is holding events like these. There have been numerous concerts, Nets games, circuses and many more events held here. Now that the NCAA has decided to let the regional games play here, it should help bring Newark's name up and this should also help Newark's economy. All of the family, friends, and fans of the teams have came to represent them from across their states. This was such an awesome event that was held here and I look forward to seeing some more things coming out of Newark. Next time I will be there. Go Newark!

Flashback Movie: B.A.P.S

Photobucket

L to R: Natalie Desselle and Halle Berry

For those who don't know, B.A.P.S stands for Black American Princesses. I found this dvd in my house and I just decided to watch it. Goodness, I can't believe I forgot how funny this movie is and how it can be a tear jerker at times. This movie shows a side of Halle Berry that most people can't even recall. Her comedic performance was awesome and her chemistry with Natalie Desselle was outstanding. Then when they are with veteran actor Martin Landau, they are unstoppable. Who would have thought that they would connect and create a movie to remember?

Photobucket

Halle Berry plays Nesi and Natalie Desselle plays Mickey and they are best friends from Georgia with dreams of owning their own business, which is a beauty salon and restaurant combined together. So with hopes of becoming video girls in LA for rapper Heavy D falling flat, they land a new deal. This deal is for Nesi to impersonate the granddaughter of wealthy elderly man who is very ill. But things do turn around and you have to watch it to find out the rest.

Rest In Peace Elizabeth Taylor

Photobucket

English-American actress, Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor, has died. She was 79 years-old. She is considered one of the greatest actresses of classical Hollywood cinema also known as Hollywood’s Golden Age. She is known for movies such as “Cleopatra,” “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” and many more. She is known more recently for being one of Michael Jackson’s best friends. Their friendship was strong from the 1980s up until his death in 2009. Her last public appearance was his private funeral service. My prayers go out to her family and friends. She was full of beauty, style and grace. She will definitely be missed and will always be a legend.

Skins: A Show That Exposes

Season one of "Skins" has ended Monday night. When I first heard of "Skins" advertised on MTV, I thought it was gonna be your typical "teenie bopper" show with cheesy themes and lame story lines. But I watched the first episode and did not expect to get hooked on it the way I did. It premiered on MTV in January and was only a ten episode season. But plenty of things happened in the first episode alone that it drew major attention to the news and parents across the country. This was no "Degrassi" and I love that show as well. I became hooked to this show because of the some of the story lines but they did have quite a bit of adult themes that made me feel kind of uncomfortable. I actually forgot at some points that these actors were playing teens, because the content was so mature. The curses they used were censored but people believed a lot more should have been. These teens were doing drugs and drinking like adults and it was a bit disturbing. Then a young girl named Cadie, who has various mental illnesses, gets prescription drugs for her friends to get high. There were scenes where they was also enacting sexual acts and that was a shock to me as well.
Photobucket

There were some relationships that rose eyebrows as well. Like the lesbian character Tea and her making out with Betty was enough to scare people who are afraid of exposing gay teens. Then for her to sleep with a guy, Tony, and give him the Chlamydia infection, which he passes to his girlfriend. There was also a teacher student relationship that grew into a disaster because this young teacher in her 20s was having sex with her student, Chris. I was even shocked that it would air on television. Then the love games between Abbud and Daisy deciding to have casual sex with one another with no strings attached. There are much more.
Photobucket

The things I did enjoy about the show was how each episode reflected on each character's life. It put you in each of their shoes. The show also expressed acceptance as far as race, disabilities, social status and sexual orientation. They even showed how these teens go through what most teens are going through that we all think is not possible. It shows how they think and interact with people, like friends and family as well. I would like to know if it will be a season two coming, because I do look forward to it.

Rest In Peace Loleatta Holloway

I would like to say rest in peace to one of disco's most prominent person, Loleatta Holloway. I was introduced to her music years ago because her songs "Runaway," "Love Sensation," "Hit and Run" and more were played throughout my home. Majority of clubs CDs my family purchased her songs were featured. Her voice was sensational and memorable and I'm sure everyone has danced to at least one of her songs at a family function. Many of her songs were sampled and her vocals were used in various tracks. My prayers go out to her family and friends. The music industry has lost another legend.

Supermoon 2011!

Photobucket

It seemed so odd that my boyfriend and I would want to chase a moon, but they say if you can't reach for the stars, catch a 'Super' Moon. Well not really catch it but get some footage of the astronomical phenomenon. We set out on our journey around 7:30PM on Saturday night and I was very anxious. I know it wouldn't look as big as most places in the world but it was surely big enough. I'm a science buff and I did notice the difference in size and brightness. It was definitely larger than normal as it rose from the east as the sunset was on the west. Finally after driving around for about a half an hour to get a good shot here in the city of Newark, NJ, we snapped a few shots and recorded some footage. I do apologize for some of the fuzziness of the photos a video because of my type of camera. If only my camera could show you what my eyes can see.

Flashback Movie: Beverly Hills Cop Series

Photobucket

Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop III

Since December of last year, Beverly Hills Cop, Beverly Hills Cop II, and Beverly Hills Cop III has seemed to air almost everyday since. It is cool to me because it is one of my favorite movie series to date. I even love Eddie Murphy's acting and comedic style and spontaneity as Axel Foley. His chemistry with Judge Reinhold (Det. Billy Rosewood) and John Ashton (Sgt. John Taggart) in the first two films are classic. Opposites definitely attract between them. I can never get enough of them.

Photobucket

L to R: Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, and Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop II

Another favorite character I love is Inspector Douglas Todd who is portrayed by Gilbert Hill. He's a little rough around the edges and he runs his precinct by any means necessary, yet has a caring attitude towards Axel which is so cool. He is stern towards him but more like a father figure. He looks out for Axel by letting him keep his job no matter how many times he slips up. You can tell that he does have a big heart. I was devastated when he was killed off in third film.

Photobucket

Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop

I like how each movie has Axel fighting for justice by breaking major laws as a police officer, but always prevails. In the mean time, he still manages to make up jokes and have fun on the side. These movie have been on heavy rotation for the past few months. My mom and I search the TV guide for it almost everyday. If we're lucky we'll catch them back to back. Keep your eyes out for these movies especially if you haven't them. Eddie Murphy at his best. Oh wow, Talk to yall later, it's on NOW! :-)
